The Three Commandments
Safety First is the rule we hold highest of the three. This rule applies to both the safety of you as well as others

Keeping yourself safe in the Wood Shop is very important, as there are possibilities for accidents if you don't follow the safety guidelines. Safety starts with you so don't depend on others to keep you safe. There is a first aid kit located on the south wall near the Wood Shop door.
The following rules must be followed at all times.

All of the concepts from The Three Commandments described on the Getting Started page apply to the entire Maker Hub. This includes The Vault. Here are some additional safety, resetting, and professional principles that apply specifically to The Vault.

All the same safety rules from the machine shop apply:

1. Safety First
+
Safety First is the commandment we hold highest of the three. This principle applies to your safety, the safety of others, and the safety of the equipment/tools.

* Safety glasses must be worn when crossing into the shop area marked on the floor.
+
* Safety glasses must be worn when working at the jewelry station, the leatherworking station, or when operating the robot arm. This is especially important when there is hammering, which is common for the jewelry station and the leatherworking station. Exercise situational awareness when hammering, as not everyone in The Vault may be wearing safety glasses.

* No horseplay in the shop.
+
* Similarly, hair that extends below the collar must be tied back when working at the jewelry station, the leatherworking station, the vacuum former, or when operating the robot arm.

* Don’t do anything distracting to yourself or others while operating machinery.
+
* If you are using the propane torch at the jewelry station, you need to keep it at the station and away from flammable materials. Hold the torch upright and pointed away from you as you use it; there is no need to tilt it completely sideways. Remember to close the valve and lock the trigger when you finish.

* Do not wear any loose clothing, jewelry, or landyards.
+
* No open-toed shoes in The Vault.

* No hats or open toed shoes.
+
* Food or drink is allowed when not operating machinery as long as it is kept a safe distance away from the machines.

* Hair will not extend bellow the collar.
+
* Do not attempt to operate machinery in The Vault that you have not been certified on.

* Do not wear gloves while operating machinery.
+
* The First Aid kit is located in the machine shop, next to the wood shop doors. There is a second First Aid kit located on the outside wall of the Tool Room near the electronics workstation.

* Food or drink is allowed when not operating machinery and it is kept a safe distance away from the machines.

* Do not attempt to operate machinery in the shop that you have not been certified on by GFU engineering personnel.

* Do not argue with volunteers or shop staff. Contact Justin Johnson if you have issues that need to be resolved.

* Do not operate machinery without a shop supervisor or trained volunteer in the shop with you. Never operate equipment alone in the shop.

* Reset the space. Make the area you are working in ready for the next person using the dust broom and vacuum cleaner.

* The first aid kit is located in the machine shop, next to the wood shop doors.

* If you see a safety violation inform the person immediately and encourage them to comply with the policies

2. Reset the Space
The Wood Shop has a specific organization to it. Put whatever you use back where it belongs. There is a place for everything and everything has a place. This rule applies to everything in the space. If you use a tool, put it back. If you use a pen, put it back. Throw away your trash and recycling.

Now, we understand that sometimes you need to leave projects out. Maybe you are in the middle of a large project and you need something left overnight. In cases like this, it is okay, but you NEED to make prior arrangements with Nick or Justin.

Please put back the Machinery the way you found it. Clean up chips and any messes you make. NEVER use shop air to clean off yourself or the machines.
+
* The same Reset The Space principles apply. When you finish working, thoroughly clean the area you are working in and make it ready for the next person. Always leave the space better than you found it.

Always put any unused materials back on the storage shelf, and throw away unusable scrap.
+
* If you remove any stock (nuts, bolts, resistors, capacitors, etc.) from the sets of drawers that are up against the Tool Room cage, make sure you document the removal by filling out the inventory removal form. You will find the form hanging on a clipboard located next to the Tool Room door. This helps us keep track of inventory to make sure it's available for you when you need it. If you end up not using all of the stock you took, RESET THE SPACE by returning it to the correct drawer and annotating the difference on the hanging clipboard removal sheet. Also, please notify the Maker Hub staff if we are out of certain inventory items, so we can properly Reset The Space for you.

Always leave the space better than you found it.
+
* The Vault is more spacious than other facilities in the Maker Hub, but it is not a project storage space.

3. Be Professional
+
3. Be Professional
This commandment has two sides to it. It covers the idea of acting like professional (which Webster’s defines as “exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace”). The term also describes the standards of education and training that prepare members of the profession with the particular knowledge and skills necessary to perform their specific role within that profession. Hopefully, you are learning both of these as part of your education at George Fox University. In the Welding Lab we expect you to develop as a courteous, conscientious, and skilled craftsman, understanding the tools and equipment in the Maker Hub and how to use them effectively.
+
* It is unprofessional to grab and hoard handfuls of stock from the inventory drawers. Even worse if you don't record the stock you are taking on the removal sheet hanging by the cage door. We simply want there to be enough stock for everyone to enjoy. The Maker Hub gladly provides as many free materials as possible to all of its users, so please don't abuse this privilege. Sure, some projects legitimately need a large quantity of materials. Just ask the Maker Hub staff about it first. Maybe we'll give you the green light; maybe we'll ask you to cover the cost. It all needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis. But also... if your wooden birdhouse needs 100 screws, maybe you should change your design.

Being a professional has some obvious ramifications in terms of behavior. First, be Christlike. Think of others better than yourselves. Share. If you have been welding for a prolonged time and someone else is waiting for the machine, let them use the machine for a while. This is being a professional.
+
* If the Tool Room door is open, it's not an invitation to waltz in and grab whatever you want. Find the Tool Room attendant or a Maker Hub staff member and let them check out the tools or bring you the supplies you need. If the Tool Room is not open, check the schedule on the Tool Room's wiki page.

If you are learning to how to use a machine, and you can't something to work the way you want - ASK SOMEONE! Learn! Become a professional. Learn the craft. This is an educational space. You might think it will be quick and you can just get it done “your” way and not learn how to do it correctly. Be a Professional and learn the proper way, and then be available to teach others.
+
* Do not argue with the Tool Room volunteers or shop staff.

One very important, and likely difficult part of being a professional is to correct others when they are not being professional. It is your responsibility to speak up when you see somebody doing something inappropriate. If you see somebody doing something unsafe, not resetting the space, or being unprofessional, the professional thing to do is to remind them of the three commandments and ask them politely to correct their action. This is OUR space, not any individual's. As a group, we expect everyone in the space to keep the space safe, clean, and operable for everyone.
+
* Always ask for help if you have a question about the usage of a machine.

If someone acts disgracefully unprofessional to you in the Machine Shop, you are welcome to bring the issue to Justin or Nick's attention.
+
* Speak up if you see inappropriate behavior or a safety violation occurring.

General Vault Knowledge
Building projects out of wood is a fun and time consuming process. It can be both additive and subtractive manufacturing. One of the most used machines in the shop is the table saw.
+
There is a variety of equipment located in the Vault as well as a good supply of electronic components and hardware for projects.

In the Wood Shop, wood is joined together using glue and different types of joints.

Each machine in the wood shop has its own special purpose and benefits. MIG is fast and much easier to learn than TIG welding. Spot welding is only used with sheet metal. TIG welding produces very clean welds and the heat is more confined to a smaller area. TIG will also allow you to weld very thin metals.

These are a few steps that will help you be successful in the Wood Shop.

* Always inspect materials for nails or metal. Metal debris in wood will damage the equipment and possibly cause injury to you.

* Gluing end grain together is a very weak joint.

* Make sure the process you are using is correct for your material type.

* Get help handling larger pieces of wood.

* When making dust turn on the dust filtration units.

Here are a couple things to keep in mind:

* Some wood dust can be toxic. Be aware of the type of wood you are working with.

* Blades and cutters are very sharp so always think before touching.

* Be aware of the location of your fingers in relation to blades and cutters. Never let your hands or finger come close to the blade path.

* Be aware of people and what they are doing around you.

* Be aware of what is on the floor around you. Don't trip on dust collector hoses or electrical cords.

* May of the machines that remove material are very load. Wear ear protection when needed.

* If something feels like it could be dangerous ask a supervisor before attempting.

The Three Commandments

All of the concepts from The Three Commandments described on the Getting Started page apply to the entire Maker Hub. This includes The Vault. Here are some additional safety, resetting, and professional principles that apply specifically to The Vault.

1. Safety First

Safety First is the commandment we hold highest of the three. This principle applies to your safety, the safety of others, and the safety of the equipment/tools.

 • Safety glasses must be worn when working at the jewelry station, the leatherworking station, or when operating the robot arm. This is especially important when there is hammering, which is common for the jewelry station and the leatherworking station. Exercise situational awareness when hammering, as not everyone in The Vault may be wearing safety glasses.
 • Similarly, hair that extends below the collar must be tied back when working at the jewelry station, the leatherworking station, the vacuum former, or when operating the robot arm.
 • If you are using the propane torch at the jewelry station, you need to keep it at the station and away from flammable materials. Hold the torch upright and pointed away from you as you use it; there is no need to tilt it completely sideways. Remember to close the valve and lock the trigger when you finish.
 • No open-toed shoes in The Vault.
 • Food or drink is allowed when not operating machinery as long as it is kept a safe distance away from the machines.
 • Do not attempt to operate machinery in The Vault that you have not been certified on.
 • The First Aid kit is located in the machine shop, next to the wood shop doors. There is a second First Aid kit located on the outside wall of the Tool Room near the electronics workstation.
 • Don’t do anything that would require an additional rule to be added to this list.

2. Reset the Space

The Vault has a specific organization to it. Put whatever you use back where it belongs. This rule applies to everything in the space. If you use a tool, put it back. If you use a pen, put it back. Throw away your trash and recycling.

 • The same Reset The Space principles apply. When you finish working, thoroughly clean the area you are working in and make it ready for the next person. Always leave the space better than you found it.
 • If you remove any stock (nuts, bolts, resistors, capacitors, etc.) from the sets of drawers that are up against the Tool Room cage, make sure you document the removal by filling out the inventory removal form.
 • The Vault is more spacious than other facilities in the Maker Hub, but it is not a project storage space.

3. Be Professional

 • It is unprofessional to grab and hoard handfuls of stock from the inventory drawers.
 • If the Tool Room door is open, it's not an invitation to waltz in and grab whatever you want. Find the Tool Room attendant or a Maker Hub staff member and let them check out the tools or bring you the supplies you need. If the Tool Room is not open, check the schedule on the Tool Room's wiki page.
 • Do not argue with the Tool Room volunteers or shop staff.
 • Always ask for help if you have a question about the usage of a machine.
 • Speak up if you see inappropriate behavior or a safety violation occurring.
